There’s a debate about whether or not editors should post their rates on their website. I post mine as a favor to you because I know what it’s like to be stretched financially and unsure whether or not something is affordable. I want you to be able to see right away whether this is something you can do or not. However, please note that I reserve the right to adjust my rates as I need to. I don’t do it often, and they won’t ever sky-rocket overnight. But if you are here one month and then come back several months later and notice changes in these rates, understand that this is a part of what I need to do to manage my business.

Also, please note that I charge by the hour for most services. This is an advantage to you because I am a very fast editor. On average, most editors can substantively edit about 2-5 pages an hour. That’s anywhere between 70 and 175 hours for a 350-page novel. At an average going rate of $50/hour…you do the math! In contrast, my average is around 15 hours for the same size of novel. I don’t skimp on the feedback, and I read through your entire work at least twice. My only explanation for my speed is that I read and think very quickly. This means you get a huge savings.
You can further lower your costs by becoming a good self-editor because then there will be less work I will have to do on your manuscript. This is one reason why I insist on a screening critique before I do a full edit. If you still need to master the basics of the fiction craft, there are far cheaper ways to do that than pay for a professional edit. I’d rather direct you to some other resources to help you improve your writing craft and then have you return later when my help will be of most use to you.
I only edit Adult or YA book-length fiction, novellas, or novella collections contracted or being targeted for royalty-paying publishing houses. I’m open to working in most genres. Please do not contact me regarding children’s novels, picture books, short stories, or any non-fiction. Please do not contact me if you are planning to self-publish in any form.
Good news! The Fiction Fix-It Shop now has a Referral Program! Read more about it here.
